How do drops evaporate?

چکیده

Abstract We consider evaporation of pure liquid drops on a thermally conductive substrate. Two evaporative models are considered: one that concentrates on the liquid phase in determining evaporative flux, and the other one that centers on the gas/vapor phase. A single governing equation for the evolution of drop thickness, including both models, is developed. Experiments are used to estimate relevant parameters. We show how the derived governing equation can be used to predict which evaporation model is appropriate under considered experimental conditions.

Sessile and Pendant Micro-Liter Drops Evaporate at Different Rates: An Experimental Approach

Evaporation of micro-liter drops from solid surfaces at room condition is mainly governed by diffusion. Therefore, there should be no difference between evaporation rate of sessile and pendant drops. However, some studies indicate a difference and explain the difference using buoyancy. The objective here is to reconcile the inconsistency in the literature. For that, first, by comparing two iden...

Measurement of Absolute Oxygen Concentration by Tunable Diode Laser Absorption Spectroscopy (tdlas) in Very Fine Water Mist Environments

Navy research shows that water delivered as a fine mist (or fog) is more effective than sprays in suppressing large scale fires[1, 2]. Fine mists have three distinct advantages. First, the small drop sizes that make up the mist allow the water to reach obstructed fires more easily than larger spray drops. Secondly, the water mist system has a lower water demand than the spray system. Lastly, sm...

Crack formation and prevention in colloidal drops

Crack formation is a frequent result of residual stress release from colloidal films made by the evaporation of colloidal droplets containing nanoparticles. Crack prevention is a significant task in industrial applications such as painting and inkjet printing with colloidal nanoparticles. Here, we illustrate how colloidal drops evaporate and how crack generation is dependent on the particle siz...

Pattern formation during the evaporation of a colloidal nanoliter drop: a numerical and experimental study

An efficient way to precisely pattern particles on solid surfaces is to dispense and evaporate colloidal drops, as for bioassays. The dried deposits often exhibit complex structures exemplified by the coffee ring pattern, where most particles have accumulated at the periphery of the deposit. In this work, the formation of deposits during the drying of nanoliter colloidal drops on a flat substra...
